The purpose of this study is to provide basic data required to work out measures to improve profitability of regional public hospitals in the future by analyzing the effects of the patients in their surgery and ICU on operating profit in an empirical analysis. For reference of this analysis, the data compiled in 2008 by 34 regional public hospitals in Korea were utilized.
From the analysis, it was revealed that the operating profit has positive (+) correlation with the number of patients in surgery and ICU. The regression analysis also showed that the number of patients in surgery and ICU have a statistically significant impact on operating profits.
It seems therefore appropriate for regional public hospitals to equip themselves with proper facilities and manpower as a measure to provide upgraded quality medical service to the people in the community in more active manner, which will improve their profitability at the same time.
